What was achieved

Elite sport, an education in patience and judgement.

Paul Adams competed internationally in eventing, reached the top 50 of the FEI world rankings and achieved success at Olympic qualifiers, having earlier gained a scholarship to the world-renowned French Cavalry School in Fontainebleau, France.

Producing horses for that level taught a simple lesson: talent is only the starting point. Sustainable performance depends on patient development, disciplined work, opportunity, effective systems and honest judgement.

Its relevance to executive leadership lies in creating the conditions for potential to develop: patient judgement, adaptation to the individual, disciplined preparation and capability that can succeed after responsibility passes to somebody else.

International performance built through patient development.

What transferred

Three lessons for institutional leadership.

The transfer is not a sporting analogy. It is a discipline of developing potential and judging performance in context.

Develop potential

Capability is not created by selection alone. Leaders must build the conditions in which talent can become reliable performance.

Judge in context

Winning is visible, but it is not always the best measure of progress. Sound judgement considers capability, circumstances, timing and chance.

Steward beyond recognition

The best result may arrive after responsibility passes to somebody else. The leader’s task is to leave stronger foundations, not to own the credit.

The experience

From mounted service to international competition.

Mounted military competition, a top-50 FEI world ranking and an Olympic qualifier supplied the experience behind these lessons. Their relevance lies not in sporting status, but in what sustained preparation, selection, setbacks and long-term development taught about patience and judgement.
